 EARLY WORK

Appreciation of raw materials attracts me to pouring paint on unprimed canvas and exploring the reaction of the support to the medium. Drawing from my martial arts training, I employ the approach of unifying with life's energy rather than blocking it to create strength by encouraging the collaboration of the paint and the canvas. The serendipity inherent in this process becomes a metaphor for life and trying to control what you can while being nimble enough to react to the unforeseen to create something better than expected. By juxtaposing fields of color with natural support, negative space plays an important part of the work.
